Fife is located in eastern Scotland. It is a peninsula surrounded by the waters of the Firth of Tay and Firth of Forth, which connect to the North Sea. Fife is one of Scotland’s 32 council areas, divisions equivalent to counties. Fife is the third most populous council area in Scotland with over 350,000 residents living in dozens of towns and villages.
Fife is separated from the Scottish Capital of nearby Edinburgh by the waters of the Firth of Forth. Major attractions and important destinations of Edinburgh are only miles away from Fife and the two locations are connected by the Forth Bridge(railway.) On the north side, The Tay Bridge(railway) and Tay Road Bridge connect Fife with nearby city of Dundee.
Fife is home to the historic town of St Andrews, the birthplace of Golf and the home to University of St Andrews, one of the oldest in Europe which currently serves over 8,000 students. The Old Course at St. Andrews is the oldest golf course in the world.
Fife is home to multiple historical buildings and landmarks, including Dunfermline Abbey, Falkland Palace, Kellie Castle, Scotstarvit Tower, Scottish Fisheries Museum.
A large portion of Fife is rural in nature, with densely populated small communities separated from each other by the countryside. Many villages and towns are located in mainland of Fife, although there are numerous waterfront communities.
Fife is home to multiple sports teams, many of them small semi-professional clubs. The most prominent professional team is Dunfermline Athletic Football Club, which compete in the Scottish First Division and play at the 12,000 capacity East End Park. There are several rugby teams; Dunfermline RFC, Fife Southern RFC, Kirkcaldy RFC, Fife Lions.
Fife has more than a dozen railway stations, connecting the towns and villages with each other and other parts of Scotland.
Fife is served by two main hospitals Queen Margaret Hospital and Victoria Hospital.
